Maine Black Bear
Hunting in Maine

Bear hunting over bait
is our specialty. Here in the highlands of Maine we have a lot
of bear because of very low hunting pressure and a lot of
natural food. If you follow our suggestions you will have a
fifty per cent chance of seeing a bear. A typical day of
hunting starts around 1:00 P.M. I take you to your blind and
bait at the same time. My bait is a blend of fresh
pastries, grain, protein supplements, greens, and molasses. I
add other things but that is my secret. All of the scents I use
I make myself.
Bears not only love to eat this bait, it
fulfills all their nutritional needs. I have found that if you
do not provide the necessary diet and only bait with pastries
the bear will leave for several days to eat what they need.
This bait puts a lot of weight on the bear quickly. The reason
I use ground blinds is for safety and I do not know of any tree
stands you can sit in for six to seven hours and be comfortable
enough to be QUIET and STILL - an essential part of bear
hunting. Much better shot placement is achieved from a ground
blind. We hunt until one-half hour after sunset. I pick you up
about one-half hour after that. Laws and licenses for bear
hunting can be obtained atwww.maine.gov/ifw
.
